Mike Walter is President and CEO of Walter Media. He's an internationally known and respected broadcaster. Mike is a skilled producer, writer, on camera performer, and voice over professional. Mike brings to his anchor/hosting duties both the credibility & personality that has made him a popular morning anchor/host in top ten markets for the past decade. Mike is currently the weekday morning anchor at the CBS affiliate in Washington DC. At WUSA, he co-anchors a two hour broadcast from 5 to 7 am, and hosts a news interview show from 9 to 10am. Mike has an impressive background:
- Mike has won four Emmy’s and has been nominated for a host of Emmys. He’s received a number of SPJ, AP, and Press Club awards as well.
- Mike produced, wrote, and hosted Walter Media’s first project for the Michigan Victim’s Alliance. The educational film, “Surviving Trauma and Tragedy: Lessons for Future Physicians and Mental Health Professionals,” was shot live to tape on location at Michigan State University. It went on to win the coveted Freddie Gold Award in 2007.
- His dynamic personality helped WUSA win an Emmy for Best Morning Newscast in 2005.
- He became the only broadcast journalist in North America to win the prestigious Dart Ochberg Fellowship in 2005.
- Mike distinguished himself with his coverage of the 9-11 attack on the Pentagon.
- Shortly after the attacks he was profiled on the Oprah Winfrey show.
- He appeared on CNN, and a number of U.S. and International networks on 9-11. On September 12th, 2001, Mike was on both hours of the CBS Early show talking live with Bryant Gumbel about the attack.
- He has been interviewed and profiled on several broadcast outlets internationally. Appearances ranged from BBC Television and Radio, to the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, the French Networks TF1, and Canal Plus. He was widely quoted in publications from People magazine, to the Washington Post, Le Monde and dozens of newspapers around the world.
- Mike was a key contributor to two books on the 9-11 attacks - “Covering Catastrophe, and “Broadcasting through Crisis.”
- In the late 1990’s while working in the Midwest Mike provided taped and live reports for Good Morning America and ABC News Now.
- As Senior Correspondent at USA TODAY LIVE he was seen across the country in markets like Washington, Atlanta, Tampa, Phoenix, Denver, St. Louis, Minneapolis, Cleveland, and Jacksonville. His reports were carried on 22 stations throughout the U.S., including WUSA, WXIA, KUSA, KPNX, and WTSP.
- He delivered live reports for the network from both political conventions in 2000.
- He was live in Boston for the first Bush/Gore Presidential debate.
- He was live in Nashville covering the Gore campaign election night, when the Vice President refused to concede.
- Covered the recount in Florida.
- Covered the historic first debate involving a first lady (Hillary Clinton) in Buffalo.
- Covered the McVeigh execution in Oklahoma City, as well as virtually every other major national news story during his tenure at USA TODAY from 2000-to-2003.
- Contributed travel/business related reports for the Weather Channel.
- He has done voice over work for a number of national clients including Geico, Hallmark, and the American Institutes for Research.
- Mike has anchored and reported in Tampa, St. Louis, Kansas City, Columbus, and two stations in California.
- Mike has just wrapped up work as director, writer and narrator for the landmark documentary, “Breaking News, Breaking Down.” The film is winning rave reviews from journalists from throughout the world.
